There are so many things to do in Kintyre you might be a bit overwhelmed. That’s why we’ve put together a few of our favourite day trip ideas to help you plan your visit.
Get on your bike!
Exploring on two wheels is a great way to see Kintyre, whether you decide to cycle into the village, or get out on the tracks and hills above the parks. For some inspiration check out Kintyre Way cycling route for gravel bike (youtube.com)
And while we’re talking about the Kintyre Way…
All our parks are close to the Kintyre Way. This long-distance route stretches from Tarbert in the north to Southend at the southern end of the peninsula, with our sites at West Loch Shores, Tarbert Holiday Park, Muasdale Holiday Park and Bellochantuy Beach Holiday Park all an easy walk or cycle from an access point.
The route is open all year round, but for any long-distance runners looking to bag an ultra, The Kintyre Way Ultra is held each year in May – check out their Facebook page for details about the next event.
You’re never too far from a golf course
Our home course is Tarbert Golf Course, which is a scenic and challenging nine-hole course with stunning views around every corner.
We also have some of Scotland’s best 18-hole courses including Machrihanish Dunes, Dunavery and Machrihanish Championship course where you can literally tee off across the Atlantic.
And if that’s not enough for you, we highly recommend a trip round Carradale Golf Course which is a fantastic nine-hole course.
Testing out the water (of life)
Kintyre is well known for its whisky industry, but did you know that you can visit some of Scotland’s best known distilleries on a day trip when you stay with us?
With the islands of Arran and Islay both a ferry trip away, and Campbeltown just a 40 minute car journey, there’s no excuse not to find out more about uisge-beatha – the water of life.
Despite Kintyre and the islands being home to so many distilleries, it’s surprising how different each whisky is. The best way to find your favourite is, of course, to try them! You’ll find guided tours at each distillery, at the end of which you’ll be invited to try a drop! Whether you decide to visit one, some or all the distilleries in the area you can be assured of a dram fine day out!
Life’s a beach when you’re with us
The Kintyre coastline is blessed with beaches and if you’re staying with us at Muasdale Holiday Park or Bellochantuy Beach you’ve got beautiful sandy beaches just footsteps from your accommodation.
One of our favourite beaches is at Westport in south Kintyre. Here you’ll find golden sand and dunes. If you’ve ever wanted to paddle in the ocean, then this is for you. It’s also one of Scotland’s best surfing beaches.
Whether you’re looking for miles of golden sands or just want to find a secluded spot to enjoy the views and get away from it all, we’ve got you covered.
Paddle your own canoe (or kayak)
This is one of our favourite ways to spend a few hours. We have canoes, stand up paddleboards and kayaks available to hire. You can also book lessons or instruction in advance of your holiday.
The waters around West Loch Shores are shallow and you will easily be able to spot mussels, crabs and some small fish relatively close to shore. For the more experienced paddler we recommend leaving civilisation behind and heading for Eilean da Gallagain, the Island of Two Strangers. As you travel round the island look out for seals and ospreys as well as wild deer on the banks on the other side.
Book your water activities with Kayak Majik by contacting them at info@kayakmajik.co.uk
Island bagging
Go island bagging! You’re only ever a short drive to a ferry terminal, no matter which of our sites you stay at! You’ll find ferry terminals at: Kennacraig for Islay; Cloanaig for Arran and Tayinloan for Gigha.
Every island has something special to share and we highly recommend a day trip to at least one of them on your holiday with us.
Party like a local
Kintyre is home to many festivals. From music and art to seafood and whisky (with everything else in between), you’ll not be far from a great day out, whatever time of year you visit.
For a list of what’s on in the area visit www.tarbertfestivals.co.uk or ask us when you’re onsite.
Sign up for an event
If you’re a sporty type then look out for events while you’re staying with us. Running events start with 5Ks and stretch all the way up to marathons and ultra marathons. Look out for the popular Mull of Kintyre 10K and Kintyre Way Ultra.
You’ll also find some cycling events too. Challenge yourself on the Kintyre 66 or take part in an organised sportive like the Kilberry Loop.
Or if you’re a multi discipline athlete then when not check out some of the triathlons held in the area?
Chill out…
Action packed days are all very good but sometimes you just need to take a breath and relax. Wherever you stay with us you’ll find that just kicking back, enjoying the scenery and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere is a fantastic way to spend a day.
And if you need a little bit more encouragement that chilling out is the way to go, what if we tell you that our onsite café at Tarbert Holiday Park always has home baking on offer…
